ASTRAUX AL6 & AL7 Winter Test: Real-World Performance in Sub-Zero Conditions

We Took It Into the Cold.
Here Is What Happened.

Cold weather is where questions get answered.

Anyone can make an electric vehicle look good on a warm day. But real confidence comes from knowing how your car behaves when the temperature drops below zero, the roads are slippery, and every system is working harder than usual. That is exactly why we ran the ASTRAUX AL6 and AL7 through a dedicated winter test — not because we had to, but because we wanted to know the truth before you get behind the wheel.

Here is what we found.

Why Winter Testing Matters for a Light EV

Light electric vehicles face a specific challenge in cold conditions. Smaller battery capacity means that heating loads — which every EV has to manage from its own energy supply — represent a proportionally larger draw on available range. A larger SUV can absorb that cost more quietly. A compact, efficient city vehicle has to handle it intelligently.

Cold temperatures also affect battery chemistry directly. At low temperatures, the electrochemical reactions inside lithium-ion cells slow down, increasing internal resistance and temporarily reducing available capacity. This is physics, not a flaw. The question is how well the vehicle manages it.

We took both the AL6 and AL7 into sub-zero conditions to get real numbers, in the real world, on the kind of roads they will actually be driven on.

What We Tested

The test covered real driving conditions across a full cold-weather cycle. We did not run a single controlled loop. We drove the way our customers will drive.

  • Cold starts from overnight ambient temperatures below 0°C
  • Extended low-speed urban cycles with frequent stops
  • Braking behavior on low-grip and mixed surfaces
  • Sustained motorway speeds in cold headwinds
  • Cabin heating performance and its measured impact on available range
  • Battery response across repeated short trips

Both the AL6 and AL7 completed the full test program without issue.

What the Cold Revealed

The AL6 and AL7 handled the cold well. Cabin heating reached a comfortable temperature within the first few minutes of driving — an important result for a city vehicle where trips are short and warmup time matters directly. Cold start response was immediate, with no delays or warnings triggered by the ambient temperature.

Range performance in sub-zero conditions came in within the expected band for a well-engineered light EV. We will publish the specific figures as part of our full technical release ahead of deliveries.

What stood out most was the braking. On low-grip surfaces, both the AL6 and AL7 responded predictably and without drama.

For an urban vehicle that will regularly encounter wet roads, mixed surfaces, and occasional frost, that consistency matters more than any single range figure.

Cold weather is the hardest test a light EV faces. Both models passed — and passed cleanly.

Transparency Before Delivery

We are approaching deliveries. If you hold a pre-sale voucher, or if you are considering placing an order, you deserve to see this vehicle tested properly — not just described.

This test was not a marketing exercise. It was an engineering checkpoint. The results confirm what the WVTA certification already told us: the AL6 and AL7 are built to perform in the real world, across all the conditions real drivers actually face.

That is the standard we are holding ourselves to. It will continue to be.

What's Next

Next up: we break down the real cost of owning a light EV versus a petrol car — purchase price, running costs, insurance, and what the numbers look like over 5 years. Then we cover what licence and registration you need to legally put an ASTRAUX on the road where you live.
